For a material to be effectively recycled, all links in the chain must function well, from source separation to recovery and reintegration into the market. We define recyclability as the capacity of packaging to successfully complete the entire recycling chain.
Reducing our ecological footprint requires clear and accessible information to make conscious decisions, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12.
With this objective, we developed and implemented the Recyclability Index, which analyzes the marketability of the primary materials used in mass-consumption packaging.
The Recyclability Index is primarily based on the ability of the city’s recycling centrers to resell the materials on the market. This indicator is updated annually.
To gather data, in-person interviews are conducted with managers of green centers. These interviews cover not only the marketability of a predefined list of materials but also the reasons why certain materials are not sold, if applicable.
Additionally, each interview explores the operations of green centers, potential challenges, updates on work dynamics and the commercialization of materials.
The results of each measurement will soon be published periodically on Buenos Aires Data, the city government’s open data platform.
This approach ensures transparency and enhances the use of data by the community as a whole.
